Understanding Your Sleep Cycles

Every night, your brain cycles through 4–6 sleep stages. Each 90-minute cycle includes light sleep, deep sleep, and REM — and your chronotype affects how many cycles you get.

NREM Stage 1 – Light Sleep
Transition to sleep, easily awakened. ~5% of night.

NREM Stage 2 – Core Sleep
Body temperature drops, memory consolidation begins.

NREM Stage 3 – Deep Sleep

REM – Dream Sleep
Emotional processing, creativity, memory integration.

What is a Chronotype?

A chronotype is your body’s natural biological inclination to be awake or asleep at certain times of day. Unlike a simple “morning person vs. night person” distinction, chronotypes are driven by your genetics, age, and circadian rhythm — your internal 24-hour biological clock.

Your circadian rhythm regulates not just sleep, but also hormone release, body temperature, metabolism, and cognitive performance. When you work, eat, and exercise in alignment with your chronotype, you naturally feel more energized, focused, and healthier.

🔬 Research Note: Studies show that people who work against their chronotype — for example, night-owl Wolves forced to start at 7am — experience chronically elevated cortisol, reduced cognitive performance, and higher risk of metabolic disorders. Using a chronotype calculator to understand your type can be a meaningful health investment.

The 4 Chronotypes Explained

Dr. Michael Breus, a clinical psychologist and sleep specialist, refined traditional chronotype research into a practical 4-animal model in his book The Power of When. Unlike earlier binary models, Breus’s system accounts for the full distribution of sleep-wake preferences:

🦁 Lion – The Early Riser (15% of people)

Lions are the quintessential morning person. They naturally wake before 6am without an alarm, feel mentally sharp immediately, and are typically exhausted before 10pm. Lions are driven, ambitious, and often in leadership roles. Their biggest vulnerability is the social world that runs on a Bear schedule — evening events drain them fast.

Famous Lions: Tim Cook (Apple CEO), Michelle Obama.

🐻 Bear – The Sun Follower (55% of people)

Bears are the most common chronotype and the one society is largely built around. They sleep and wake with the sun, feel productive in the morning, experience a post-lunch energy dip, and recover energy in the late afternoon. Bears tend to be social, easygoing, and health-conscious.

🐺 Wolf – The Night Owl (15% of people)

Wolves can’t fall asleep before midnight and struggle intensely with early mornings. But when the sun sets, they come alive. Wolves are typically creative, risk-taking, and highly social — they thrive in fields like art, music, entrepreneurship, and late-shift professions. Society’s 9-to-5 structure is a constant challenge for Wolves.

Famous Wolves: Barack Obama, Marcel Proust, Charles Darwin.

🐬 Dolphin – The Light Sleeper (10% of people)

Dolphins are named after the marine mammal that sleeps with one brain hemisphere at a time, always partially alert. Human Dolphins are light sleepers — easily awakened, prone to insomnia, and often anxious. Despite poor sleep quality, Dolphins can be intensely intelligent and productive in scattered bursts throughout the day.

Why Your Chronotype Matters

Understanding your chronotype isn’t just about optimizing sleep — it has wide-reaching implications for every area of your life:

  • Productivity: Scheduling deep work during your peak cognitive window can double your output with no extra effort.
  • Health: Eating in sync with your chronotype reduces metabolic disruption and inflammation.
  • Relationships: Chronotype compatibility affects sleep quality for couples. Lion-Wolf pairs often struggle with mismatched schedules.
  • Mental health: Chronic social jetlag (living against your chronotype) is strongly associated with depression, anxiety, and burnout.
  • Athletic performance: Studies show body temperature peaks in the late afternoon, making this the optimal time for physical performance — but this shifts by chronotype.

How This Chronotype Calculator Works

Our chronotype calculator uses a weighted scoring algorithm based on seven key inputs that have been shown in sleep science research to reliably predict chronotype:

  • Natural bedtime and wake time — The most direct indicator of your circadian phase.
  • Sleep duration preference — Bears and Dolphins have different duration needs.
  • Peak energy time — When your subjective alertness is highest correlates with melatonin onset timing.
  • Morning alertness score — Lions score 8–10; Wolves rarely exceed 4 on natural wake days.
  • Preferred workout time — Lions gravitate to dawn runs; Wolves prefer evening gym sessions.
  • Difficulty waking — A high score strongly predicts Wolf or Dolphin status.

Each input is mapped to a 0–100 score across all four chronotypes, then weighted and normalized to produce your percentage match. The primary chronotype is the highest score, and we show all four for comparison.

Best Sleep Schedule Based on Chronotype

Frequently Asked Questions

A chronotype is a scientifically defined biological preference for sleep and wakefulness timing, rooted in your genetics and circadian rhythm. The “morning person vs. night person” binary captures only part of the picture. Chronotype science recognizes a spectrum with four distinct clusters — and factors in not just when you sleep, but when you peak cognitively, physically, and creatively.
Yes — chronotypes shift naturally with age. Children tend to be Lions. Teenagers undergo a biological shift toward Wolf patterns (which is why early school start times are scientifically problematic). Adults gradually move back toward Bear or Lion patterns, especially after age 50–60. Lifestyle, light exposure, and work schedules can also influence your chronotype slightly.
This is common! Your primary chronotype (highest score) is your dominant type, and that’s where you should start optimizing. If your top two scores are close (within 10%), you may sit between two types — look at the schedules for both and see which feels more resonant. Many Bears have Wolf tendencies, especially if they’ve worked late shifts for years.
Not exactly. Dolphin chronotype describes a pattern of light, fragmented sleep and general hypervigilance — traits that overlap with insomnia symptoms, but aren’t the same diagnosis. Some Dolphins have clinical insomnia; others simply have a higher arousal threshold and lighter natural sleep. Dolphins often benefit from strict sleep hygiene, cool dark rooms, white noise, and avoiding screens before bed more than any other chronotype.
Our calculator uses inputs validated in sleep research literature as reliable chronotype indicators. For maximum accuracy, answer questions based on days with no social obligations or alarm clocks — your “free” sleep patterns are the truest signal. For a formal clinical assessment, consider the Munich Chronotype Questionnaire (MCTQ) or Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ).
You cannot change your fundamental genetic chronotype, but you can shift it slightly through strategic light exposure (bright light in the morning for Wolves, dim evenings for Lions), consistent sleep schedules, melatonin timing, and exercise timing. Research suggests you can shift your circadian phase by 1–2 hours with deliberate effort over 3–4 weeks.
